Chairs! If you know me personally you know I have a slight obsession... you can never have too many! Chairs are a fun and my personal favorite way to add personality and color to any room. This week I received a rush order for four wood dining chairs to be updated with a matte grey finish, not my usual color of choice but a fun project all the same! The set of Windsor style chairs I used was a mix that I rescued from different places around San Francisco. A light sanding, two coats of Benjamin Moore Iron Mountain matte grey, a coat of satin Minwax polycrylic and these chairs where ready to be on their way to the Hampton's! Safe travels! As this set of dining chairs were being picked up to make the trek across the country I welcomed another set of four to transform! Here is the "Before" stay tuned for the "After"!
This cute but dated nightstand has been tucked in the back of the workshop for awhile now, just waiting for its turn to be transformed! I pulled it out of storage, dusted it off, took a step back and after staring at it for a few minutes formed a plan of attack. I knew I wanted to visually open it up and show off the cute little legs by taking off the cabinet door. After the door and all of the hardware was removed I filled in the holes and sanded it. Followed by a coat of primer and a couple coats of glossy white paint it was time for my favorite part...the pop of color! I painted the now cubbyhole and inside of the drawer this sweet pastel sweet pea green! I had this delightful swirly heart shaped drawer pull on hand that was perfect after a touch of green! This nightstand is a wonderful addition to any bedroom in your home. Style it for your little ones room, your guest room or even as an end table in the living room.
This past week has been a busy and productive one. I have been staying up late and getting up early to paint and get some more products ready to bring into the shop. Here is a look at some of the works in progress and some items I have finished this week. This nightstand is going through quite the transformation, I have removed the lower cabinet door, given it a coat of primer and will be adding a pop of color this evening! (Stay tuned for the final product) Spoiler Alert: These old window panes are being repurposed into a sandwich board for the shop! Right now they have been primed and will be given a fun color for the frames and a chalkboard to share info. I have also completed a collection of colorfully chic vases! Stop by and take one home for your weekend flowers! Tomorrow the Inner Sunset Farmers Market will be right around the corner! The new paint booth was built and used to paint these wonderful mid century metal candlesticks a fun modern copper! We also tackled this big hutch, a piece with great bones but a bad paint job. The hutch has been successfully stripped and will be getting the first coat of primer and paint this weekend! I'm really exited about this piece so I will be leaving the color a secret... I will post the final product and its before and after transformation once complete. I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend! See you all next Saturday!
Happy Independence Day! Today I am going to share with you the before, during and after of this three drawer dresser. When I first brought the dresser home it wasn't too bad, the paint was "eh" but for the most part the dresser's bones were in great shape. I knew right away I wanted to paint the dresser a deep blue with gold accents, however the gentleman at the paint store was not entirely friendly and quite careless resulting in the shade of blue you see below. This is not the blue I selected to have mixed... nevertheless after sanding and a coat of primer I continued forward with many coats of the blue until I was happy with the tone. On to the gold accents! Let me set the scene for you... A Tuesday night, a glass of wine, HGTV on the screen and me painting gold into the many grooves of the dresser. There are many reasons why I love working for myself, but this may be my favorite! After a few coats of gold to the dresser and a touch to the glass drawer pulls I finished the dresser with a protective clear coat and put the pieces back together!
I never met a color I didn't like ~ Dale ChihulyI completely agree with Dale, color makes me smile and I incorporate it into all of my refurbished pieces. Take a look at this free standing cabinet, a vintage Showers Brothers Company piece from Bloomington, Indiana. This cabinet was abandoned on a San Francisco sidewalk, missing hardware and had a few really bad coats of streaky brown paint. With help from my very supportive boyfriend we carried this piece three blocks up one of San Francisco's notorious hills, onto the light rail and finally another couple blocks home. I was not yet the owner of the incredible orbital sander that I now have, thanks again to my amazing boyfriend, so I sanded this large piece entirely by hand. I believe this labor of love paid off. After about a week of late night sanding sessions I began with a coat of primer followed by a few coats of glossy white. The vintage hardware was great but I wanted this piece to have a more modern and whimsical feel. I am not a hoarder by any standards, the complete opposite really, I like things neat everything with a home and a purpose, definitely not a collector of tchotchkes. On the other hand if an item has a purpose that I believe I will use in the future I will hold onto it. For instance, these wonderful glass drawer knobs were from a dresser I refurbished for myself when living in New York City about seven years ago. The vintage drawer pulls from this piece may one day find a home on a more modern item. And since I named this post "Pop of Color" here it is! A fun mint interior to make you smile every time you open it. This piece is in great condition with wear consistent to the age but has so many great decades to go making you smile.
First impressions. Whether you live in a small city apartment on the fifth floor of a walk up or a large suburban house with a spacious front porch there is always something you can do to make your entrance more inviting. These large planters will probably not be a good fit for the landing to your fifth floor walk-up apartment, for that I do have a smaller version of this planter. The larger size however will create a modern statement to any of the beautiful historic San Francisco homes or businesses. I brought these planters home the safest way I knew how, seat belted of course! Then taped off a portion I thought would be pleasing to the eye. The finished product is a fun contrast of shiny metal and matte cement (21.5" H x 14.75" W)! I currently (as of 6.11.2015) have a small (11.5" H x 8.5" W) lime green planter, found in photo gallery, and 2 medium (16" H x 12" W) unpainted and taking requests. And gave them a few coats of metallic copper paint!
Once home I gave them a light scuff and quiet a few coats of glossy white paint. To really make them shine I added a couple coats of clear gloss and added a felt to the bottom to protect them and any surface they may land on. Owls are wise, beautiful and powerful creatures. A bird of prey and a symbol of wisdom. I have always been drawn towards them and when I saw this set at the Alameda Point Antique Faire I had to take them home and bring new life into their cute little faces! I currently have two sets available for purchase, $75/set
This olive green crushed velvet upholstered seat arm chair screamed dated and HELP ME! So I brought it home and dove right into striping it down. It was a chair with good bones that had been given up on and I was excited to give it a second chance at being a beautiful addition to a wonderful home. After removing the olive upholstery I began flipping through my stacks of fabrics for inspiration. I knew I wanted to paint the piece glossy white to showcase the details on the front legs and that the seat should be something bright to keep it from being too traditional.
This dusty forgotten about chair went from an old dated piece with good bones to being transformed into a Colorfully Chic modern arm chair! This chair is stilling looking for the previously stated wonderful home! Today delightful designs is celebrating its one month anniversary! Wahoo! I thought it was a good day to kick-off a blog and to show some of the behind the scenes blood, sweat and tears that went into making a dream become a reality. First off I would like to thank everyone who contributed to my Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign, your support helped me get this life changing set of keys! Check out the before....I've got to say it was in pretty good shape but oh boy those dated ceiling tiles had to go! So down they came. The drop ceiling was covering a beautiful tall ceiling with amazing charm, unfortunately it had been let go and past the point of repair for this first time entrepreneur budget.
